The original Glenn Miller
Orchestra In True Stereo
|
| |
|
Are You Kidding-STEREO?
The original; Glenn Miller Orchestra circa
1941…
.pull the other one mate!!!
|
| |
|
If I saw this CD in the shops in 1994
which I doubt, I may well have dismissed it as just another CD with the film sound track re-enhanced to simulated
stereo, and said no thanks.

Well here we are in the year 2002 and
thanks to Big Band Buddy George Spink who passed on information that he had received about a recording that is
in fact the original Glenn miller Orchestra recorded in Stereo.
Now read on don't go away or you'll missed the facts.
This recording is the results of the film company 20th Century -Fox, having recorded the music sound track on several
tracks on the 35mm film.
|
| |
|
This is indeed true Stereo, as you've never
heard the original Glenn Miller orchestra before.
|
| |
| |
|
This is what the sleeve notes of the CD say:-
The music soundtracks for Glenn's 20th Century Fox Film captures the band at its very
best in technical fidelity that far outstrips his RCA Victor records. In those pre-tape days, the music and vocal
were recorded on separate channels on 35mm film, to allow for the greater flexibility in editing and preparing
the music for the final film track. Though not the original intention these separate tracks would allow, in later
years, for a true stereo mix to be made from the vintage source material.
Though these soundtracks have been issued on record before (in monaural), they've never been heard to such advantage.
|
| |
| In the case of the music heard here, a good portion of the soundtrack material has been
mixed into stereo. This allows us to hear, for example, the voices of Pat Friday and the Modernaires on separate
channels (I Know Why); the Miller brass on the left and the saxes on the right. |

|
This is with out doubt the best original
recording every produced of the civilian band and every Miller enthusiasts should have this CD.

|
Moonlight Serenade just fills the room and will
sweep you off into paradise as you listen to some of the best music from the Miller films.
Not all the tunes are in Stereo but you have of course Moonlight Serenade followed by the long version of I Know
Why with Pat Friday and John Payne doing the vocals with of course the Modernaires.
Then come a mono version of Sun Valley Jump. Then we are back into Stereo with the whole caste singing It Happened
In Sun Valley with the vocal refrain by Glenn Miller, Milton Berle, Sonja Henie, John Payne and Pat Friday. No other
band in existence today has ever produced such a swinging version than next on the CD of In The Mood, as this recording
from the film. Marvellous. Even in this mono version it's the best.
Next comes Measure for Measure. (Mono).
The Kiss Polka in Stereo.
The Spirit is Willing Mono.
Chattanooga Choo Choo seven minutes fifty one second of True stereo of this classic Glenn Miller number with Tex
Beneke, Paula Kelly and the Modernaires, Dorothy Dambridge and the Nicholas brothers. Wow turn up the volume on
this one and get lost in the middle of your surround sound.
Now come a stereo on a Medley of tunes, I know Why-At Last-The Kiss Polka and It Happened In Sun Valley.
The big bonus for all Glenn Miller fans is the inclusion of the Radio Preview of the film, which was aired prior
to the film release. This is fourteen and half minutes of extracts from the film with all the tunes.
Other tracks include alternative takes of the tunes used in this CD.
If they just released the Stereo tunes on a CD for the sane price it would have been worth it.
